Digital and smart locks in Fourways
Smart locks are very good at a problem people usually describe wrongly. They are a key-management upgrade rather than a security one. If your difficulty is letting a cleaner in on Tuesdays or a guest arrive after you are asleep, they solve it elegantly. If your difficulty is a weak door, they do nothing whatsoever about it.
What they genuinely do well
Granting and withdrawing access without physical keys. A code for a contractor that expires on Friday, a code for a house-sitter you cancel from your phone, entry for family who lose things — real problems, neatly handled.
Most keep a log too, so you know the back door opened at 14:20 rather than guessing. For anyone letting a property or managing regular access by other people, that alone can justify fitting one.
Batteries, power and the override
A smart lock is a battery-powered device sitting on the outside of your house. Batteries go flat, generally at an inconvenient moment, and the better ones warn you well in advance — check what that warning actually looks like before relying on it.
The mechanical override matters more here than anywhere else. We fit smart locks with a physical key path wherever the hardware allows, because a lock whose only route in is electronic is a lockout waiting for a flat battery. Anything mains-dependent needs its outage behaviour understood before it goes on the door.
Estates and approval
Estates and complexes commonly regulate what may be fitted to an external door, and a smart lock changes the appearance of one considerably. Check before buying rather than after fitting.
Some developments also integrate door access with the estate's own system, in which case a standalone smart lock may duplicate or conflict with what is already there. The estate office is the right first call.
No obligation
Not sure which of these applies to your door?
Fitting it so it lasts
Most smart lock disappointments are installation problems rather than product problems. A motorised bolt fighting a door that has dropped will drain batteries quickly and eventually fail outright, so the door has to be right before the lock goes on.
We assess the door first and will say plainly if it needs adjustment beforehand. That is not an upsell — it is the difference between a lock that lasts and one that becomes a callout.

Digital & Smart Locks — common questions
What if the battery dies while I am out?
On a well-chosen lock, very little happens: it warns you for weeks beforehand and there is a mechanical key path as backup. We fit models with a physical override precisely so a flat battery is an annoyance rather than a lockout.
Are they more secure than a normal lock?
Not automatically. They are better at controlling and recording access. Resistance to someone physically attacking the door still comes from the bolt, the frame and the fixings.
Will my estate let me fit one?
Worth checking before you buy. Many estates and complexes regulate external hardware, and some integrate door access with their own system, where a standalone smart lock may conflict with what is already in place.
Can I still use a physical key?
On most models we fit, yes, and we would recommend keeping that route serviceable. Locks with no mechanical path put every single entry through the electronics.
