Lock repair in Fourways, before it becomes a callout
A lock almost never fails on the day it inconveniences you. It has usually been getting harder for months — a key that needs a wiggle, a handle that wants lifting twice, a door that only locks if you push it. Those are symptoms with specific causes, and dealing with them at a booked appointment costs a fraction of dealing with them at midnight.
It is often the door, not the lock
Doors move. Timber takes up moisture through a wet Highveld summer and gives it back through a dry winter, hinges settle under their own weight, and a strike plate that lined up perfectly two years ago is now two millimetres out. The lock gets blamed because it is the part your hand is on.
On a multipoint mechanism — common on newer estate homes — this matters more than most people realise. Forcing the handle against misaligned keepers is the single most reliable way to destroy a gearbox, and a gearbox is one of the few failures where replacement genuinely is the only route.
What we check, in order
The door and frame first: hinge wear, alignment, whether the keepers meet the bolts squarely. Then the mechanism: springs, cams, the state of the cylinder internally. Only then do we talk about parts.
That order matters because adjusting a door is cheap and replacing a lock is not. If your problem is alignment, we would rather spend twenty minutes on the hinges than sell you hardware that will develop exactly the same symptom.
Gates, garages and the things nobody checks
Security gate locks live outdoors and take dust, weather and daily force. They seize, and the instinctive response — more force — bends the keeper and turns a clean-and-adjust into a replacement.
Garage side doors, outbuildings and complex gates go the same way, usually unnoticed until the day they matter. If a technician is on site anyway, having those looked at costs very little compared with a separate callout later.

Lock Repair — common questions
The key is getting stiff. How long have I got?
No way to put a number on it, but it will not improve on its own. A stiff key is either a worn cylinder or a door out of alignment, and both progress. Booking it now is considerably cheaper than an emergency callout when the key finally will not turn.
Why does my door only lock if I lift the handle hard?
That is the door and frame rather than the lock. The multipoint mechanism is being forced to engage against keepers it no longer lines up with. Adjusting the keepers or hinges normally fixes it, and continuing to force it is what eventually breaks the gearbox.
Can a seized security gate lock be saved?
Often, yes. Gate locks seize through dust and weather rather than wear, and once stripped, cleaned and properly lubricated many work perfectly well again. Replacement is only necessary where the body is corroded through or the keeper is bent.
Do estate rules affect a repair?
Rarely for a repair, since nothing visible changes. They matter more when a lock has to be replaced and the new hardware must match an approved finish or style — we will raise it before ordering anything.
